Helianthus annuus 'Holiday'

  • Description

If you like well-branched, very free-flowering, traditional yellow Sunflowers, 'Holiday' is the one you've been looking for. At just 120cm (4ft) tall, it bears armfuls of large, cheery 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) blooms blooms on 30 to 45cm (12 to 20in) stems. Beginning in midsummer and continuing over a long season, it produces a rounded bush shaped plant with multiple side shoots. it is a favourite for its super floriferousness and easy, no-staking, branching habit. Ideal for cut flowers because the plants set so many flowers in such a compact space, 'Holiday' is also irresistible in a large garden planting. The sunny faces are a rich dark brown, surrounded by golden-yellow petals that keep their fresh look over a long period. If you are used to short-blooming older varieties, you're in for a big treat with 'Holiday' This plant usually does not need staking, yet is tall enough to make a big impression in sunny border, beds, and other settings. It is a wonderful variety for both florists and gardeners, providing summer colour to bouquets and arrangements. The flowers bear pollen, so it is a good variety for bee forage and seed production. It just may become your favourite! Sowing: For early flowers, start indoors as early as February or March, or sow directly outdoors in in mid-April through to mid-May. For continuity, sow a succession of sunflowers every fortnight for six weeks in the early part of the growing season. In a hot summer, each cycle from sowing to blooming will take about 60 days.
